With the year
Unicode has no script digits, so numbers cannot be "cursive" in copy-and-paste text. The usual fix is to pair cursive words with bold digits, which come from the same Unicode block of styled letters and numbers:
| Copy this | Notes |
|---|---|
| โ๐ถ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ฉโฏ๐ ๐ดโฏ๐ถ๐ ๐๐๐๐ | Script words, bold digits |
| ๐๐ช๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ช๐ป ๐๐๐๐ | Bold script words, bold digits |
| โโฏ๐๐โด ๐๐๐๐ | Short caption |
| ๐ขโดโด๐น๐ท๐โฏ ๐๐๐๐, โโฏ๐๐โด ๐๐๐๐ | Countdown post |
| ๐๐ฝโฏโฏ๐๐ ๐โด ๐๐๐๐ | Toast or invitation |
New Year's Day 2027 falls on a Friday, and New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, handy if you are making invitations.
Why some letters look different
In "Happy New Year", the H and both e's look a little different from the other letters: โ and โฏ. They come from Unicode's older Letterlike Symbols block. When the full script alphabet was added later, it left gaps for letters that already existed, such as โฌ (U+212C), โฐ (U+2130), โฑ (U+2131), โ (U+210B), โ (U+2110), โ (U+2112), โณ (U+2133), โ (U+211B), โฏ (U+212F), โ (U+210A) and โด (U+2134). Generators swap them in automatically. The cursive Unicode cheat sheet lists every script character.
Where cursive New Year text works
| Place | Works? | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram and TikTok captions | Usually | Keep hashtags in plain text so they stay searchable |
| WhatsApp and text messages | Usually | Bold script reads best on small screens |
| Bios and usernames | Varies | Some apps restrict usernames to plain letters |
| Word processors | Yes | Or use a real script font for printing |
| Older phones | Sometimes | A few characters may show as boxes |
Our cursive compatibility matrix shows which styles display on which platforms, and the Instagram cursive guide covers captions and bios in detail.
Accessibility note: screen readers may read styled Unicode letters one by one or skip them. For an invitation, put the date, time and address in plain text.
How to write Happy New Year in cursive by hand
Draw light pencil guidelines first. All three words start with a capital, so the capitals set the style for the whole line.
Happy
- Capital H. Two tall stems joined by a loop across the middle that flows into the a.
- a. A closed oval with a short down stroke.
- p, p. Straight stems below the baseline, each closed with a rounded bowl.
- y. A u-shaped hump, then a loop below the line.
New
- Capital N. Start with a small upward curl, go down, climb diagonally up and finish with a final down stroke that leads out to the e.
- e. A small loop at the middle line.
- w. Two quick dips like a u, then a small bridge at the middle line to finish.
Year
- Capital Y. A small hump, then a long loop below the baseline.
- e, a. A small loop, then a closed oval.
- r. Climb to a small peak, step down slightly, then finish with a short exit stroke.
The tricky parts are the bridges: the w ends at the middle line, not the baseline. See the letter pages for cursive N, cursive w and cursive Y, or print a practice sheet with the worksheet generator.

Five steps to a hand-lettered New Year card
- Plan the layout. Decide where "Happy New Year" goes and how big it will be. Sketch it on scrap paper first.
- Pencil the guidelines. A baseline, middle line and top line keep the capitals and small letters even.
- Write the words in pencil. Check that H, N and Y all have room for their loops.
- Ink over the pencil. Go slowly and keep the pen moving through each word without lifting, except after letters that do not join in your style.
- Erase and decorate. When the ink is fully dry, erase the pencil and add stars, confetti dots or a simple underline flourish.
Metallic pens on dark card are a classic New Year look: gold or silver ink on navy or black paper. Test the pen on a scrap of the same card first, because metallic inks can take longer to dry and smudge easily.
Other text styles for New Year posts
Cursive is not the only option. The same Unicode font generator can produce bold, italic, bold italic, double-struck and gothic (Fraktur) letters from the same block of styled characters. A popular combination for countdown posts is a cursive greeting with the year in bold digits, as in the tables above. Avoid mixing more than two styles in one caption, or the post starts to look cluttered.
Resolution and journal lettering
The first page of a new planner is a nice place to practise. Write the year in large cursive across the top, then a short heading such as "Goals", "This Year" or "One Word" underneath. Use the same pen throughout the journal so your headings match from month to month. If you want to improve your handwriting itself during the year, our guide on how to improve cursive handwriting has a short daily routine.
Ideas for using cursive New Year text
- Card fronts: "Happy New Year" large in a script font, with a short handwritten note inside.
- Party invitations: cursive heading, plain-text details.
- Countdown stories: "Goodbye 2026, Hello 2027" in script with bold digits.
- Planner covers: write the year in cursive on the first page of a new journal.
- Gift tags: a short "Cheers" or "Best Wishes".
For printed designs, a real script font often looks smoother than Unicode text; see the best free cursive fonts on Google Fonts.
Sending New Year wishes to friends abroad
If you send greetings in another language, check how the accented letters display. Unicode script letters have no ready-made accented versions, so a word like "Aรฑo" or "Frรถhliches" may mix styled and plain letters, or show the accent slightly out of place. Two safe options:
- Write the greeting in a real script font in a design app or word processor and share it as an image, with the words in plain text in the caption.
- Write it by hand on the card, where accents are no problem at all, and the personal touch is part of the gift.
For Russian greetings, our Russian cursive generator handles Cyrillic handwriting styles.
Common mistakes
- Trying to make digits cursive. There are no script digits in Unicode; use bold digits or write them by hand.
- Crowding the capitals. Leave a word space before N and Y so each capital has room for its loop.
- Dropping the w bridge. End the w at the middle line so it reads as "New" and not "Neu".
- Using a decorative style for everything. One cursive line plus plain text is easier to read than a whole paragraph in script.
Happy New Year in cursive checklist
- Choose script for headings, bold script for small screens
- Add the year with bold digits (๐๐๐๐)
- Keep hashtags, dates and addresses in plain text
- Pencil in guidelines before hand lettering
- Give each capital (H, N, Y) room to loop
- End the w with a bridge at the middle line
- Test on your phone before posting

Frequently asked questions
How do you write Happy New Year in cursive?
Write a looped capital H joined to "appy", then a capital N joined to "ew" (end the w with a bridge at the middle line), and a capital Y with a long loop joined to "ear". Leave a clear space before each capital.
Can I copy and paste Happy New Year in cursive?
Yes. Copy โ๐ถ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ฉโฏ๐ ๐ดโฏ๐ถ๐ or the bold version from the tables. It is Unicode text, so it works in most apps, captions and messages, although a few older devices may show boxes.
How do I write 2027 in cursive text?
Unicode has no script digits, so copy-and-paste text pairs cursive words with bold digits, for example ๐๐๐๐. If you are writing by hand, simply write the numbers in your normal style to match the words.
Why do the H and e look different?
โ and โฏ come from Unicode's older Letterlike Symbols block. The newer script alphabet left gaps for letters that already existed, so generators use those older characters in their place.
What day is New Year's Day 2027?
New Year's Day 2027 is Friday, January 1, 2027. New Year's Eve is Thursday, December 31, 2026.
Will cursive text work in my Instagram caption?
Usually, yes. Unicode cursive displays in most Instagram captions and bios. Keep hashtags in plain letters so they stay searchable, and remember that screen readers may not read styled letters correctly.
