Cursive M: How to Write Capital and Lowercase M

American classrooms usually teach either Zaner-Bloser or D’Nealian cursive. For M, the biggest visible difference is how rounded the bowls are and whether the entry stroke starts on the midline or slightly above it. Pick one method per assignment; switching mid-word makes m look like a different letter on the line. If your district handout shows a loop you do not recognize, match the school model before practicing at home.

When you compare your paper to a chart, check three checkpoints: height relative to the midline, slant angle (about 35 degrees for many programs), and whether the exit stroke lands on the baseline ready for the next letter. Join m into e, a, or i with the same exit used after n. Keep connectors short so the three humps do not stretch into a wavy line.

Drills that actually change muscle memory

Spend five minutes on mmm across a ruled row before writing whole words. Then write ma, me, mo, mi, and mu to feel how vowels accept the exit stroke. Slow practice beats fast repetition: if your hand cramps, the pen grip is too tight. Lift only where your teacher allows—many programs permit a lift between words but not inside a word.

For capitals, write five M names (first names or cities) in a column. Capitals should be no more than twice the x-height of lowercase unless your model shows otherwise. If M is a descender or ascender letter, compare its reach to letters like b, d, or g on the same sheet so lines stay parallel.

Unicode 𝓂 and 𝓶 are fine for nicknames and short labels, but they do not teach joins. Students still need pencil practice.
