Cursive j mirrors i above the baseline but continues into a descender loop below the line, then receives a dot. It is less common in English but critical for names and for training descender control similar to g and y. Uppercase J often begins with a flourish and ends in a curved tail. Keeping the upper stem of j the same width as i prevents the letter from looking like a misplaced g.
