Direct answer
A cursive keyboard can mean three different things, and only one of them needs a keyboard app. You can install a third-party keyboard that types styled characters, copy and paste from a web tool with no install, or save a text shortcut that expands into cursive you pasted once. For documents, skip all three and pick a real script font. CursiveGen does not make a keyboard app. We build copy-paste and image tools, so this guide compares the options as honestly as we can, including where our own method is slower.

What people mean by a cursive keyboard
People searching for a cursive keyboard usually want to type in cursive inside a text message, a bio or a note. Here are the four routes and what each one costs you:
| Route | What it does | Where it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard app | Types styled characters as you tap | Any app that accepts text, once the keyboard is switched on | An extra app sees your typing; setup steps |
| Copy and paste | Converts text on a web page, then you paste | Anywhere you can paste text | One extra step per message |
| Text shortcut | A short code expands into text you saved | Apps using your default keyboard | Best for a few repeated phrases |
| Script font | A real font inside a document | Docs, Word, printed files | Does not work in chat or bio fields |
If a keyboard app's cursive is made of characters rather than a font, it has the same limits as copy-paste. Those characters are Unicode math letters, and they only cover Latin letters (Unicode Technical Report 25).
Route 1: a keyboard app (check these first)
On iPhone, install the app from the App Store, then go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards and tap Add New Keyboard (Apple Support). While typing, touch and hold the keyboard-switch icon to pick it. On many Android phones, install it from Google Play, then open Settings, System, Languages & input, On-screen keyboard and turn it on. Samsung phones keep this under General management, Keyboard list and default (Android Central).
Before you install any keyboard, check three things:
- Full access. Apple's developer documentation says that when you turn on Allow Full Access, your keystrokes are available to the keyboard developer. With it off, keystrokes go only to the app you are typing in (Apple Developer Documentation). Leave it off unless the keyboard cannot work without it and you trust the developer.
- The privacy policy. A keyboard sees everything you type, so read what the developer says it collects.
- A test in a notes app. Type a sentence first. Never use a styled keyboard for passwords, card numbers or addresses.
Route 2: copy and paste, no install
This is the method we recommend for most people because nothing is installed and nothing sees your keystrokes except the page you are on.
- Open the Unicode font generator in your phone browser.
- Type your text in the box.
- Pick Bold Cursive, which has the widest support in our compatibility matrix.
- Tap Copy.
- Paste it into your message, caption or bio.
Instagram bios allow up to 150 characters (Instagram Help Center), so check the length after you paste. For platform-specific tips, see our pages for WhatsApp, TikTok and Discord. On a computer, the CursiveGen Chrome extension converts text on any page from the right-click menu, and its conversions run on your device.
If you see boxes instead of letters, the phone's font is missing those characters. Switch to Bold Cursive, or post a PNG from the handwriting tool instead.
Route 3: turn it into a shortcut
If you reuse the same cursive line, such as a sign-off or your name, save it once.
- iPhone. Go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Text Replacement, tap the plus button, paste the cursive text into Phrase and type a short code into Shortcut (Apple Support). Text Replacement works with the default keyboard only, not with third-party keyboards (How-To Geek).
- Android with Gboard. Open the keyboard settings, then Dictionary, Personal dictionary, tap the plus button, enter the phrase and add a shortcut (Android Police).
Pick a code you would never type by accident, such as a made-up four-letter string. Do not use shortcuts for passwords or private details.
A worked example: a cursive sign-off
- Type "Thanks, Sam" into the Unicode font generator and copy the Bold Cursive result.
- Open Text Replacement on iPhone, or the Personal dictionary in Gboard on Android.
- Paste the cursive text as the phrase and type a code such as "qzthx" as the shortcut.
- In any message, type the code and accept the suggestion.
Test it once in a notes app before you use it in a real conversation.
What cursive text can and cannot do on a phone
Every cursive keyboard route above produces the same kind of result, so they share the same limits:
- Letters only. Unicode has script letters for the Latin alphabet but no script digits (Unicode Technical Report 25). We ran the same conversion the generator uses on "Merry Christmas 2026!" and the numbers stayed plain. If dates or numbers must be cursive, export an image from the handwriting tool.
- The other person needs the characters too. If a friend's phone lacks them, they see boxes even though yours looks fine. Send a test message to someone on the other platform before you rely on it.
- It is decoration, not a font. You cannot change it later with a font menu. If you want a different style, convert the text again.
Cursive in Google Docs, Word and PDFs
Documents are the one place where a real font beats pasted characters.
- Google Docs. Open the Font menu and choose More fonts. You can add most fonts from the Google Fonts library there (Google Fonts Knowledge), and Google's help page notes you can search for types like "script" (Google Docs Help). Families such as Great Vibes, Dancing Script and Sacramento are on Google Fonts, and they are among the 10 fonts the CursiveGen handwriting tool exports.
- Microsoft Word. Microsoft 365's cloud fonts include script styles such as Segoe Script, Lucida Handwriting Italic, Brush Script MT Italic and Edwardian Script ITC (Microsoft Support). Microsoft also suggests embedding fonts if you share a file with people on older versions of Office.
- PDFs. Set the font in your word processor before you save to PDF. If the file must look identical everywhere, export a PDF or PNG from the handwriting tool instead of pasting Unicode into a document. Our Unicode versus font-based cursive guide explains the difference.
Cursive keyboard safety and accessibility
Unicode's own chart says the math letters are for mathematical variables, and that for general text you should use standard Latin letters with markup (Unicode chart). Screen readers may announce each styled character by its Unicode name instead of reading the word. So keep names, contact details, addresses and instructions in plain text, and use cursive for decoration only. Our Unicode generator page gives the same advice.
Common mistakes
- Installing several fancy-text keyboards. Each one is another app that sees your typing. Try one at most.
- Turning on full access by default. Only do it when the keyboard cannot work without it and you trust the developer.
- Using cursive for forms, usernames or contact details. Plain text is safer for anything a person or a system has to read exactly.
- Pasting Unicode into a document for print. Use a script font or a handwriting PDF instead.
- Never testing on the other platform. An iPhone-to-Android test takes one minute and saves an awkward boxes message.
Which cursive keyboard route should you use?
| You want to... | Use |
|---|---|
| Style one bio, caption or message | Copy and paste |
| Type cursive all day in many apps | Keyboard app, after the checks above |
| Reuse one phrase or sign-off | Text shortcut |
| Print or share a file that must look the same everywhere | Handwriting PNG or PDF |
| Style text in a document | Script font in Docs or Word |
FAQ
How do I get a cursive keyboard on iPhone?
Install a keyboard app from the App Store, then go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards and tap Add New Keyboard. You can also skip the app, copy cursive text from a web tool and paste it, or save a Text Replacement shortcut. Leave Allow Full Access off unless the keyboard needs it and you trust the developer.
How do I type in cursive on Android?
Install a keyboard from Google Play and enable it under Settings, System, Languages & input, On-screen keyboard. Menu names differ by phone, and Samsung uses General management. The no-install option is to paste cursive text from a web tool. Gboard's personal dictionary can store a shortcut for text you use often.
Do I need to install a keyboard app to type in cursive?
No. Copy and paste from a Unicode font generator gives the same kind of styled text without installing anything. A cursive keyboard app only saves you the copy and paste step.
Is it safe to give a cursive keyboard Full Access?
Apple's developer documentation says that with Allow Full Access on, your keystrokes are available to the keyboard developer. Leave it off if you can, read the developer's privacy policy and never type passwords through a styled keyboard.
How do I use a cursive font in Google Docs or Word?
In Google Docs, open the Font menu, choose More fonts and add a script font. In Word, pick a script font such as Segoe Script or Lucida Handwriting from the font list, which Microsoft 365 provides through its cloud fonts. Set the font before saving to PDF.
Why does my cursive text show as boxes?
The device's font does not include the Unicode characters the text uses. Switch to Bold Cursive, which has the widest support in our tests, or use a PNG from the handwriting tool.
